Check out the many links to even more interesting areas! It is only one part of 'Welcome to Teachnet' which includes lessons plans, a Teacher-2-Teacher Forum where you can ask or respond to questions. How I Used It: I use this site for ideas on lesson plans on technology or other subject, to learn about newest technology used in education, to link with other professionals, to find keypals, and much, much more.

URL: http://school.discovery.com SiteName: Discovery Channel School Description: Discovery Channel has developed a site for all teachers to use with their educational programming on Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel. There are Subject Area Managers [SAMs] who are teachers who assist in the teaching/learning process. These educators have placed lesson plans, suggestions, and other educational items for teachers to use. They have divided their programs into themes. This is a great site. Check it out. How I Used It: I have used the programming in Great Books in my English classes. The films are short and the materials at their website are educationally sound. The Forum gathers teachers, parents, and students in one place to share and ask questions. I thoroughly recommend this site to teachers who wish to coordinate educational television programming and Internet usage. You owe it to your students to check out this site.

This site also links to information on videoconferencing. How I Used It: This site is most useful when developing lesson plans and finding good safe sites for students to explore.

The site contains lesson plans, vocabulary enrichment, activities, focus questions, and Internet sites/links. How I Used It: As an English teacher I have used the site and the videos to encourage my students to view the author and his work as important elements in the study of great literature. I have been able to correlate a study of Melville's _Moby Dick_ with another video on the whales. Roger Payne's _In The Company of Whales_ is a great companion piece to go with the study of Ahab's obsession with the white whale. I also used the _The Odyssey_ to show the connection with sea travel. These units make the study of literature more enjoyable for my students.

How I Used It: I especially like the word puzzles. There is also a large selection of lesson plans.

URL: http://weathereye.kgan.com/ SiteName: WeatherEye Description: Lesson plans put students in real-life weather situations, such as being a weather consultant for companies and being a mayor of a city about to be hit by a hurricane. There are other lessons on tornadoes and blizzards. How I Used It: In the hurricane activity, students can role-play characters in a Florida city and decide whether to evacuate the city based on the track of a hurricane. As a weather consultant, the students can find data on temperature, precip., snowfall and wind speed to tell a company which cities will be the best to market their products. In the tornado lesson, students find information on tornadoes and then can take an on-line quiz.

There is also professional information, product information and other resources. This site was also recommended by Andy Bremar of West Virginia. How I Used It: I check this site weekly for new lesson plans. I also look here for information on grants and new education research. I have also downloaded their excellent screen saver which has all of this information.

URL: http://sln.fi.edu/franklin/rotten.html SiteName: The World of Benjamin Franklin Description: The site begins by outlining interesting facts about Benjamin Franklin, but it goes on to link to a WIDE range of sites for information on areas of interest that Franklin had, such as meteorology, earth science, creative writing, etc. It also provides links to lesson plans and classroom activities that teachers might wish to incorporate into their teaching. This is a fabulous site for all subjects and age levels up to the beginning of high school. How I Used It: I have used it as a resource for an on-line practicum course that I am currently taking in which we must construct lessons entirely on-line, including all reference materials. Site visitors learn recycling concepts through art activities by using solid waste as a source of free or inexpensive art supplies. Activities are added frequently. How I Used It: I use the lesson plans and ideas to teach children about different artists, what media they use and how to use recycled materials in art projects.

How I Used It: Great resource for teachers trying to incorporate art from the Internet into their curriculums. Over 40 pages of help and ideas.

How I Used It: Are you kidding? You would not believe the free stuff I have gotten in the two months I have utilized this site. I have received everything from free videos, stickers, mouse pads, lesson plans, to a complete computer kit put together specifically for educators to teach students about computers.

How I Used It: For research for topics to enrich and integrate classroom teaching, information sites for educators to increase their knowledge of environmental education, sites for students to research EE issues.

How I Used It: It was created to inspire other teachers to post their own portfolios and share lesson plans and units. I use it as a springboard to other wonderful sites. Each site contains a star rating, brief description, age level, a hyperlink and the URL of the site. How I Used It: In our school this site is used by our teachers and staff to find information to enhance their curriculum they are teaching in the classroom. Once they have found a site that is of interest to them, they inform our technology coordinator who helps the students use the site in the Technology Center. This site saves time and even helps the teachers learn what is out there for next years lesson plans.

URL: http://www.edsOasis.org/ SiteName: Ed's Oasis Description: Ed's Oasis provides many opportunities for education professionals to find classroom and professional gems... web sites and information for just about every academic area as well as professional development. There's also a Spotlight page with stories of educators who have successfully used the Internet in the classroom. Ed's also is conducting a contest rewarding teachers with outstanding lesson plans utilizing the Internet. How I Used It: Ed's allows me to find many sites I can utilize in a social studies classroom. It's also an invaluable resource in professional development and technology, for example, building a classroom web page. All in all, when it comes to helping teachers teach, Ed's is a combination of the Hope Diamond and Heart of the Ocean of education.

How I Used It: Besides managing it, I use it for activities, research, and professional development.

It also provides an opportunity for students to share their school web sit, and find answers to technology glitches, that are precise and understandable. How I Used It: *I use the schedule bumped to my e-mail to preview any program ideas that I might be interested in. I then go to the Discovery Channel site and request a reminder so that I don't forget to set my VCR at school! *Share ideas and ask for information from other educators, on the discussion lists and bulletin board *Enter mailing lists geared for educators *Great resource for new ideas for teaching basic curriculum objectives - many minds are better than one!

Online lesson plans for 49 peer reviewed for excellence, content, and design sites. How I Used It: As a teacher, you could follow the lesson plans which link to specific locations on a site and then take you back to the lesson plan and EDSITEment. As a powerful resource to show students how to complete research with regards to copyright laws, sound research, and integrity.

Any K12 student or class may participate! How I Used It: My students write several poems throughout the year and publish them on Poetry Pals. We map locations from which other student poems were sent and compare their poetry with our own.

It has complete lesson plans that teachers may use or modify for use in the classroom. How I Used It: I found that the most reluctant readers really enjoyed solving the short mystery Who-dunnits. My students wrote their own mysteries and were very involved in the process.

It offers links in every subject area and useful lessons too! How I Used It: I wish I had more time in the year to use this site, but I have taken lesson plans, projects, and useful sites that I have shown my 8th grade students in the classroom or which they have used for their own reference in doing research.

It is a great resource for locating lesson plans for all disciplines by grade level. Many other resources are also available. How I Used It: When I need help in creating a lesson plan I search this site for ideas and activities that will enhance my curriculum.

It also an excellent applied technology section that is very useful. How I Used It: I have used the applied technology section as a supplement to my units in this area. I have used the activities to help me design a Structures circus This is where my students work on many different design challenges briefly and then choose one on which to do an in-depth inquiry project.

URL: http://www.learner.org SiteName: Journey North: An Annenberg/CPB Learners Online Pr Description: Offers a variety of school-wide projects that cross the curriculum( science, social studies, math, art) and is appropriate for a wide range of student abilities. The projects offer hands-on experiences and excellent resources for students and teachers. Best website I have discovered! How I Used It: Students participate in hands-on activities that include a wonderful integration of subject areas using the Internet. Lesson plans are provided and projects are monitored by entering data on the computer using e-mail. Responses from participating schools nationwide are posted using e-mail on daily basis once the project is underway.What a motivating way to teacher students. A great PR tool for schools and an exciting education adventure for students who connect via the Internet to other locations nationwide who are involved with Journey North projects.

How I Used It: A teacher can use this site to find Maryland State learning outcomes and indicators, Dimension of Learning descriptors, connections to sites that assist in locating information about performance based instruction and evaluation.

It has a VAST collection of curriculum links in many subject areas that are just a click away for other teachers or students. (Check our the Solar System links for example.) It also has a very extensive Teacher/Parent Resource section I am submitting this site to help other teachers. Not necessarily for a prize. Under Lesson Plans there are almost 25 sites for teacher help with lesson plans. Under projects, there are links to the most common sites with ready to go projects. Under resources, there are NUMEROUS links to many topics: gifted, early childhood, art, PE, music, etc. Just for fun has links to some good activity sites. I thought that our site could help other teachers also. How I Used It: We use the curriculum links for simple reading activities that match the topic being studied in class. It is also used for simple research about a given topic.

She is the author of the book Kids' Computer Creations. Within this site, Ms. Sabbath gives background information and easy to follow lesson plans that will benefit both the teacher and the student. Students will be able to practice using a drawing program on the computer as well as learn important color concepts. Best of all, Ms. Sabbath highlights a famous artist each month and demonstrates various drawing lessons on the computer that incorporates the style of the studied artist. She suggests using the drawing program in KidPix but any drawing program will be fine. Sample lessons teach about the color wheel, complementary colors and warm and cool colors. How I Used It: I am most excited about this site because I can use the lessons to augment my art lessons in class with technology. I teach an art concept, like the color wheel, and students do their follow-up lesson(s) on the computer, using KidPix to create the described project on the lesson plan. I often find that I use other medium in addition to the computer. But, by using the computer I am teaching technological skills as well as reinforcing my art lesson. I also teach about the styles of famous artists like Van Gogh and Picasso. When I teach about the history and the style of these artists, I am again able to follow-up my lesson with a computer lesson that allows my first grade students to create a two-dimensional scene or a three-dimensional object that follows the art style of the famous artist. My school has contracted with Meet the Master, which combines several on-site instructional visits with follow-up projects that teach the style of selected famous artists.

How I Used It: Students in my university education class use this site as a demonstration model as they develop their own lesson plans, activities and websites. I have also included the artwork of my K-4 elementary school students along with interactive activities which support the curriculum.

Content is geared towards that information sought after by teachers, parents and students. The focus is grades K-12. The site is constantly changing, as new topics are listed for further development as requests are submitted to me. Material is a mixture of my own insights, and links to outstanding sites in the fields. Topics range from lesson plans, math, reading, children's safe Internet fun, to homework help, parenting skills, to teacher resources. This site is easy to navigate and tries to make each topic appealing. I work very hard to assure that ALL of the information is Family Safe and is RASCi and Safe Surf rated. Please let me know if my site has been useful, and feel free to make suggestions and report any links that are no longer appropriate! (The site was recommended by its creator.) How I Used It: This site has a large following identified through repeat visits, a successful review in a newsletter. Teacher's students and parents all around the world have visited and sent email and signed the guestbook expressing its helpfulness. The Multicultural Page was highlighted Oct. 1st at Leslie College's Diversity Day by Mary Forkin, College Librarian.

How I Used It: I have students solve some of the on-line mysteries, analyze them for plot structure, suspense, settings, development of characters, etc. I also have them research well-known mystery authors (e.g.:Poe, Christie, Conan-Doyle) as well as modern mysteries (RL Stine, Shirley Holmes, Tales from the Crypt, etc.). How I Used It: I made the site, IE I am the web author. My purpose in making the site was to organize all of my bookmarks into a usable form. Having done that, I opened the site to other teachers as a resource.

Also links to many excellent sites for English teachers. This is an especially good sit for new teachers. How I Used It: I access the links page when I take my class to the computer lab. I print out lesson plans and handouts for use in my classes.

How I Used It: I especially like the 3 business simulation games that build students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I let my students run their own companies and make decisions about supply and demand, profit margins, interest payments, etc. These downloadable games at 3 levels of sophistication are appropriate for students from 8 years old to high schoolers.

Teachers have access to lesson plans, professional organization links, curriculum databases and so much more. The K-12 resource page is particularly helpful. How I Used It: Since the Mass. Curriculum Frameworks in Social Studies is being realigned many teachers are desperate for info. in areas that were previously assigned to other grade levels. They have quick access here, to up to the minute resources with the ability to judge its appropriateness instantly. I have recommended several parts of SDCOE to teachers in grades 4-12. It is also appropriate for early Childhood and primary grade teachers

How I Used It: this is an excellent resource for lesson ideas, tutorials for creating and updating my own web site.

URL: http://www.dosomething.org/kjchallenge SiteName: Martin Luther King Jr. Challenge Description: The site contains a full curriculum for competing in the KJ Challenge, but for our students it is more than a two week contest. There are quotes from Martin Luther King, lesson plans, and assessment sheets. How I Used It: We use the site to explain who Dr. King was, what he stood for, and what we can do to be like him. We teach our students to look for the positive things they do every day instead of the negative. For example: you can not tattle on someone doing wrong, but you are free to point out a kindness. This refocuses the student's attention on what they do wrong, to what they do right.

How I Used It: This site was designed to assist Florida's teachers in meeting their state's mandate for Holocaust education. We (USF) realized that many teachers were unprepared to meet this mandate, so we created this site to give teachers a basic understanding of the Holocaust, sample lesson plans, and links to the best Holocaust resources on the Web.

There are also links to sounds and graphics for those students creating multimedia projects. How I Used It: Students can use the site for historical research. It saves time and cuts down on student surfing. Teachers also can use the links for historical research and finding sites on web design, Internet lessons,etc. Students can use the site to get information, graphics,and sounds for their Hyperstudio projects.

The site is divided into the following topics: Early Childhood Links, Computer Family Night Training Resources, Lesson Plans, Student Work, Suggested Software,and Additional Resources. How I Used It: This site is an excellent resource with many tips on utilizing technology in a balanced literacy program. It offers curricular connections as well as easy to follow, step by step guides for using specific software packages. It's a great professional planning resource.

This site also includes many excellent course related links. How I Used It: My students and their parents can keep track of daily lessons and required homework. In class, my students use the links to do research for class assignments.
